Attending industry conferences is a good way of keeping in touch with new developments and trends, and you meet plenty of key personalities who can help broaden your contact base.

Most conferences have industry panels of specialists who answer questions from the floor, and provide some lively debate on issues of relevance. These are very useful forums for gaining real knowledge about the industry, and making useful contacts.
